Waving an IML frontrunner goodbye

Enrico Corsini

One-and-a-half year since the acquisition, Enrico Corsini, MCC Korsini’s CEO, is proud to have meticulously led his team and operations through the integration period and the business unit IML to the right direction. For him, finalizing the transition into MCC also means closing off on his successful career as a frontrunner in the IML industry: “It’s been a wonderful journey, but it’s time for something new”.

What are the key milestones you're most proud of during your career in IML?

Enrico: Of my 28 years in packaging, I spent 26 in IML. I joined the Korsini family business in 1996, back when we were producing 3 products for the local market: thermal paper coupons, pre-cut labels and carton packaging. In 1998, along with other innovations, I introduced the first IML project to our company. It was exciting, as we were the first in Turkey to do so, and it brought us to the next level as a business, moving away from commodities.

A second big milestone is when we partnered with Korozo in 2004, enabling us to become an IML-dedicated company. It was a fulfilling time being the architect and founding partner, strategizing on how we could become a global IML supplier. That quickly became reality when we started to export in 2005, Denmark being the first European country we supplied to. The years after, penetrating the European IML market more and more, were a fertile soil for further growth.

Opening commercial offices in Asia Pacific and North America helped our growth strategy that included the acquisition of the first factory in the Aegean free zone in 2012. Enlarging our plant’s footprint supported our global business.

Then in 2015 came our adventure in the US. In a joint venture with another big label company, we started an IML plant in North America. At that point, we could truly say that we were a global IML supplier. We made our ambition true, even becoming the second largest IML player in the world!

How did you navigate challenges along the way?

In our early years, targeting the global multinationals and competing against European IML players was no walk in the park. The above milestones are the result of hard work, a mindset of innovation and customer centricity, and the will to differentiate ourselves from competition.

Enrico Corsini, CEO MCC Korsini

We had a clear goal and our strategy of customer centricity paid off. Our business partners understood that we could offer a solution for every expectation, always aiming for those tailormade solutions that would satisfy them and their customers.

This way we built a reputation of being very responsive in service, offering support whenever and wherever necessary.

Needless to say, innovation played a key role. Differentiating from competition by offering pioneering options in terms of label features, or technical capabilities like printing technologies or film properties.

Along the way, we were focused on training our people and continuously improving what we do.

What do you see as the biggest opportunities for future growth and development of IML?

Enrico: In only one year time, the knowledge, expertise and operations of 3 world-class IML legacies (Verstraete, Korsini and Karydakis) have merged under one roof – needless to say I’m excited for the value this integration will bring to the market, the product portfolio and the service towards our customers.

As a business unit, being a global supplier of considerable size and resources, we have a certain responsibility towards the packaging industry. Many sectors depend on plastics. Offering proven innovations that support sustainable, mono-material packaging, is essential in spreading awareness about the sustainable use of plastics. I’m referring to NextCycle IML™ and SealPPeel, but I know there’s more in our portfolio pipeline that will make sure we take on this responsibility in a good way.

I also believe that other market segments will embrace IML in the near future. The medical sector for example, is on the verge of where the paint pail industry was many years ago, ready to convert to IML packaging.

And finally, how do you feel saying goodbye to your legacy?

Enrico: We have the best people on the spot, in leadership and in operations. I’m convinced that with Mathieu leading the business unit, we are set for further growth. He has a vision of customer centricity, and great commercial and operational skills that allow him to determine priorities and opportunities for our local plants to grow on a global, unified level.

I’m leaving MCC with a confident heart. From the acquisition on, the goal was to secure a good handover of the Korsini business. I like challenges, as you can tell from the milestones and strategic moves Korsini has on its record. It’s been a wonderful journey, but I’m ready to explore other destinations. It’s time to write new success stories.
